As a speech/language pathologist she worked with the adolescent population to develop their college essays by having them recognize their talents, capabilities, uniqueness, and the challenges they had to overcome. Then they told their stories creatively, and in their case it was nonfiction. After becoming a widow the author had to come to terms with her new status and recognized her own uniqueness, capabilities and self-worth in order to navigate both widowhood and entering the dating scene. After speaking with many single women, regardless of their ages, she found that their experiences hadn’t been that different than her own. Then using the same creative process she had taught her students, she decided to explore the world of the single dating female inspired by the many encounters with women of different ages and of different circumstances. Her conclusion is that there is a little adolescence in all of us! The result of her exploration is The Unexpected Connection which is her first adult novel.
